Looking at these makes me think of my grandparents.
My father's father used to slice them for supper at his backyard picnic table and salt them.
My mother's mother used to cut off unwashed slices right while we were still standing in the plant rows. While she was holding the sugar shaker. And then she'd coat each slice in sugar. We'd eat the sugared tomatoes right there in the garden. I can still almost taste that.
I've never tried them with sugar! I'll have to do that. I love them with salt. To me the ultimate is a tomato sandwich with lots of mayo and salt and pepper. Cheddar cheese is excellent on it too. Has to be white bread, so that the mayo and tomato seeds and pulp kind of mix with the bread in a soggy wonderland of flavor. I'm drooling here. :-)
Oh god, my kids are insane over grilled cheese sandwiches with tomatoes. We use sprouted grain whole wheat, though. It's not so good for uncooked sandwiches, but it toasts up awesomely. We like the taste of it better for grilled cheese than with plain whole wheat or sourdough. And we don't use actual cheese, we use the Yves cheddar cheese soy cheese. So... yeah, we have a weird looking fridge, I guess.
My what beautiful pictures. I love tomatoes, as a matter of fact eating them told me when one of my children were pregnant. Now with acid reflux, I can't eat them any more.
Kate you have a wonderful Blog and you can be sure I will be dropping in to enjoy Mother Nature (earth and in the flesh) --- thank you so much for visiting me.

wow - those tomatoes look fantastic!
if i wasn't concerned about food miles (which mr chick once thought was some new-fangled air miles scheme!), i'd ask you to ship some over
the toms we get here in the UK are so pale and tasteless for the most part (although things are getting better)
