They look like they might be the beginning blossoms of some species of cornflower - but not the batchelor button kind (god I hope you know what I'm talking about when I say batchelor buttons).
Thanks for the ideas, Katie, the picture isn't very clear but I think I've figured out they are "Bottle gentian" (Gentiana andrewsii)
I've never seen them before!!!
