Stoneflies are giant and we have tons of them coming in the house right now. They are a sign of a healthy creek but I wish they'd stay in the creek! :-)
J- yes, Dave told me this, and I looked into it and read that they are seen as an indicator of good water quality because they can't live in polluted or stagnant water. Biologists/ecologists look for them (as well as caddisflies and mayflies) to tell if the creek is healthy.
oh for God's sake. It's a cockroach with wings ... that likes to live near clean water. Did you say IN DANNY'S ROOM? Come back to the city. I'll take care of you. And thanks for your comment -- hope you got my email -- no rush to reply. just wanted to make sure you got it. xoxoxoxo
M- LOL. I'm not moving to a city ever again, if I can help it. Sorry, I'll take snakes and stoneflies anyday, if I can also listen to the sound of the creek and the crickets as I fall asleep at night, or look up through the skylight at a quilt of stars. :-)
I'm fairly certain stoneflies have no mouths. I think their very short life is useful to fish alone and for others around here it's limited to the purpose of temporarily blinding humans as we enter a swarm of them.
We live next to a creek and so we play with them. We've had many as pets. I'm sorry ( I like them) and I probably missed my true calling of 'entomologist'.
Eeeeeeee! It's not the idea of bugs (bugs are fine, if they keep their larvae and droppings out of my lunch), but it's the size of the photo. Eeeeeeee!

Really? The ones I see in Danny's room are usually dark, grayish black.

Oh, and BTW, they aren't as big as that Pic!!!!! They are about 2 inches long?
Oooh, do you have caddisflies, too? They're cool in their little cases.

Be well Kate. They do not bite.
